The muonionalusta meteorite is a fine octahedrite mostly of iron with 8% nickel and trace amounts of iridium gallium, and germanium, it is the remnant of the iron core of a planetoid. Recent work has shown the prescence of a rare form of quartz called Stishovite, SiO2 which indicates this meteorite sustained a massive high speed impact hundreds of millions of years ago. It landed on earth about a million years ago and sat quietly waiting though several ice ices to be discovered by some children playing in Sweden.
The first attempt ended in a failure as the dial cracked along the weak grain boundaries. I am glad this happened because the replacement meteorite turned out to have beautiful colors as I wanted both blue and purple in a nice dichroic display.
